Peace Corps Launches Tech Corps to Bring AI Technology Expertise Overseas

Peace Corps Launches AI-Focused Tech Corps

The U.S. Peace Corps is introducing a new Tech Corps initiative, sending American technology experts abroad to promote the adoption and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in developing countries, the White House announced.

Mission of the Tech Corps

Tech Corps volunteers will embed directly with local institutions to provide hands-on “last-mile” support for AI projects. Their work could include helping teachers incorporate AI into classrooms, collaborating with national health offices on AI models, or assisting agricultural organizations in refining critical datasets.

Responding to Global AI Competition

The initiative comes amid growing competition from China in AI adoption, with systems like DeepSeek gaining popularity in developing nations. The U.S. aims to maintain its technological influence abroad by leveraging this new program.

Volunteer Requirements and Support

Graduates with backgrounds in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) or professionals with AI expertise are encouraged to apply. Volunteers may serve missions up to 27 months, receiving housing, healthcare, a stipend, and service awards. Deployments could begin as early as this fall.

Integration with AI Exports Program

Tech Corps missions will align with the American AI Exports Program, which aims to export U.S. technology, including hardware, data systems, AI models, and cybersecurity tools, to selected partner countries identified by the administration.

International Participation

While no country has officially joined the AI Exports Program yet, U.S. officials have extended invitations to nations such as India. Additionally, ten countries—including the United Kingdom—have signed the Pax Silica initiative, a non-binding agreement to secure the global AI technology supply chain.

Complementary U.S. AI Initiatives

At the AI Impact Summit, the U.S. also announced the National Champions Initiative, designed to integrate foreign AI companies into the American technology ecosystem and strengthen global collaboration in AI development.
