US Uses Ukraine-Made Anti-Drone Technology to Counter Regional Threats
The United States has begun utilizing Ukrainian-developed anti-drone technology at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, according to a Reuters report. This move comes in response to increasing drone-related threats, including incidents linked to Iran that have caused damage to aircraft and resulted in the death of a US service member.
Ukrainian Experts Training US Forces
Sources indicate that Ukrainian military specialists have been sent to the base to train American personnel in operating the “Sky Map” system. This advanced platform has been widely used by Ukrainian forces to identify aerial threats. It particularly Iranian-designed drones such as the Shahed models, and to coordinate countermeasures using interceptor drones.
Growing Importance of Counter-Drone Systems
As low-cost drones continue to shape modern warfare, especially in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Pentagon has significantly increased its focus on counter-drone capabilities. These technologies are now seen as essential for protecting military assets and personnel in high-risk regions.
Security Gaps Highlighted at Strategic Air Base
The deployment of Ukrainian technology at Prince Sultan Air Base. Its located roughly 640 kilometers from Iran, underscores existing vulnerabilities in US air defense systems. The base has faced repeated drone and missile threats since the escalation of regional tensions, making it a critical point for testing new defensive measures.
Ukraine’s Earlier Offer to Supply Drone Defense Systems
According to Axios, Ukraine had approached the United States about selling its interceptor drone systems nearly seven months ago. These systems had already been tested in combat conditions. However, the proposal was initially declined by the administration of former President Donald Trump.
Shift in US Approach Toward Ukrainian Technology
Recent developments suggest a shift in Washington’s stance. In March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that the US had requested assistance from Ukraine to strengthen its defenses against Shahed drones, which have been used by Iran in attacks across the Middle East.
Trump’s Previous Remarks on US Capabilities
Despite these developments, Donald Trump later stated that the United States did not require Ukraine’s support in countering Iranian drones. He emphasized that American drone technology remains among the most advanced globally.
Deployment of Interceptor Drones in the Region
Reports also indicate that the US Army has sent approximately 10,000 Merops interceptor drones to the Middle East. These systems, previously used by Ukrainian forces, are designed to neutralize incoming drone threats efficiently.
